Auditions for the 2018 – 2019 season
Are you interested in joining our team? Choir of the Sound holds its regular auditions during the summer, but we also welcome auditions throughout the year. (Note: Those who pass their audition after the beginning of the third week of any quarter will be asked to join the subsequent quarter.)
To schedule an audition, please email us at auditions@choirofthesound.org or call 206-528-9990.
Audition process
- Your audition will begin with an extended warm-up to display the range and qualities of your singing voice. This will include singing a familiar song.
- You will be quizzed on intervals, rhythm, and pitch retention.
- You will be asked to sing a short musical excerpt consisting of a simple melody.
- You will be asked to sight-read your voice part on a standard four-part chorale/hymn.
No prepared piece is required.
Rehearsal Schedule
Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:45 PM at Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church. The group also meets on Saturdays twice a quarter in Mountlake Terrace for all-day rehearsals. There is also a mandatory weekend retreat held every year in January. Choir members are allowed to miss three rehearsals per quarter, no questions asked.
Performance Schedule
The choir performs three major sets of shows a year, a Holiday show in December, a Winter concert in March, and a Pops show in early June. The group occasionally collaborates with other local groups on joint performances, such as the 2015 performance of Carmina Burana at Benaroya Hall.
The Holiday and Pops shows are usually performed at Shorecrest Performing Arts Center in Shoreline. The Winter concert is often performed in a church or cathedral setting in Seattle.
In addition to quarterly shows, the choir performs at other venues from time to time, such as the Argosy Christmas Ships for the holidays, and at sporting events.
Solos, dancing, memorization
There are solo and dance opportunities for choir members. Auditions for solos are held early in the quarter. Dances require extra rehearsals.
Music for our holiday and pops is mostly memorized. Music usually is not memorized for our annual winter concert.
Dues
Dues are $50 per quarter, so roughly $150 in dues to participate in the holiday, winter, and spring pops show. Choir members must also cover the cost of the music, roughly $30-40 per quarter. Choir members keep their music after each quarter.
